The Department of Public Works is responsible for all areas of the Borough including storm sewers, sanitary sewers, signs, sanitation, recycling, curbside collection, snow plowing, streets and roads, sewers, parks, bulk pick ups and playgrounds and public buildings.

Grass and Leaf pick up will occur March through December. On Wednesday, place bags at curb the night before for pick up.
LEAVES WILL ONLY BE PICKED UP IN BIODEGRADABLE LEAF BAGS.
GRASS/LEAF COLLECTION: Grass and Leaf pick up will begin the last Wednesday of March and end on the last Wednesday of December. Place bags at curb the night before for pick up. Grass/leaves will only be picked up in paper biodegradable bags. Plastic bags will NOT be picked up. Grass/leaves can also be taken to the Recycling Center. Leaves cannot be raked or blown to the curb or roadway. Refer to Ordinance #1727-06, Chapter 355 or call 732-968-1603 for more information. Branches are accepted at the Recycling Center all year. Do not put branches at the curb.
RESIDENTS WILL BE ENTITLED TO 20 BAGS WHICH WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR PICKUP AT THE RECYCLE CENTER IN NOVEMBER.
LEAF BAGS AVAILABLE:
- Leaf bags are currently available for November while supplies last
- Bags will be given out during Recycle Yard normal business Hours (Tuesday through Saturday)
- A coupon is required to pick up the bags
- Bags will be given out while supplies last
Twice a week garbage will start the week of Memorial Day and continue until Labor Day. Remaining months, September through May will be on a once a week schedule.
If your garbage pick up falls on a holiday Monday or holiday Tuesday while once a week garbage is in effect your pick up will be on Wednesday.
Please help keep Middlesex clean - do not store garbage at the curb. Put it out just prior to your scheduled pickup and remove empty cans from the curb by 8:00 P.M. on pickup day. Use regulation, clean covered containers not over 50 pounds.
NOTE: Cans must be 32 gallons or less with removable lids. Weight is not to exceed 50 lbs. Cardboard will not be picked up with regular garbage. Residents can take cardboard to the Recycling Center or put out for their scheduled recycling pickup.
HOLIDAYS: Garbage pickup will be suspended and the recycling center closed on the following days:
- New Year's Day
- Martin Luther King Day
- President's Day
- Good Friday
- Memorial Day
- Independance Day
- Labor Day
- Columbus Day
- Veterans Day
- Thanksgiving (plus the following Friday and Saturday)
If a holiday falls on Saturday, Borough Services will be closed on Friday. If a holiday falls on Sunday, Borough Services will be closed on Monday. All pickups will resume on your next scheduled day.
Bulk pickup is limited to one per year, and is arranged by appointment only. Rules are strictly enforced, so please read carefully.
Please call (732) 968-1603 between 6am and 7pm. Or call (732) 356-7400 x278 and leave your name and number; your call will be returned to arrange for pickup.
Large appliances ("white metal") can be picked up by appointment throughout the year.
There will be no pickups scheduled in November, December or January. Bulk pickups will resume the first Wednesday in February.
Residents moving in or out of town should not leave bulk at curb.
- All debris at curb no sooner than the night before, no later than 5:00 A.M. on day of pickup.
- Please try to limit to one yard of debris, the size of 2½ office desks.
- Package debris no more than 50 pounds in a bundle.
- Debris from businesses will not be picked up.
- Debris from contractors will not be picked up.
- Items that will not be picked up during bulk pickup:
- hazardous waste
- kitchen garbage
- yard waste
- grass clippings
- tires and metal
- construction material
- stockade fencing
- propane tanks
- hazardous waste
- any recycling items
The Middlesex Borough Recycling Center is located behind Borough Hall, at 1200 Mountain Avenue. For curbside recycling dates, please refer to the recycling booklet or call (800) 488-6242.
MIXED PAPER:Newspaper should now be placed with mixed paper (magazines, catalogs, junk mail, brown paper bags, nonmetallic wrapping paper, office records, computer paper, file folders, receipts, telephone books, softcover books, hardcover books with covers removed greeting cards). Mixed paper is not accepted in plastic bags or paper leaf bags.
CORRUGATED CARDBOARD: Tissue, cereal, pizza, shoe and gift boxes are now included.
FREE CONTAINERS:New residents can obtain one free rectangular container with lid and one free round commingled container. Additional containers can be purchased. Must show proof of new residency. Recycling buckets are available for purchase at Borough Hall on the first Friday of the month. For more information, please call (732) 356-7400 x278.
